Embroidery files are not interchangeable: each machine brand reads a set of formats. DST and PES are two of the most common.
DST
DST originated with Tajima and is read by most commercial embroidery machines. It stores needle positions and commands (stitch, jump, trim, color change) in units of 0.1 mm. It does not carry real thread colors; a color change is just a stop, and the operator assigns threads at the machine.
PES
PES is Brother’s format and is also read by many home and small-shop machines. It can carry color information and extra data, which makes it convenient when you want the file to remember its threads.
Which should you use?
- Commercial or multi-needle machines: DST is usually the safe choice.
- Brother or Babylock machines: PES is native.
- Not sure: check your machine’s manual for supported formats.
Can you convert between them?
Converting a file keeps the stitches, but fabric, density and machine settings still matter. Re-check the preview after converting.
