Turning an image into a DST embroidery file takes five steps. The difference between a file that sews well and one that needs rework is mostly decided in the first two.

1. Start with clean, flat artwork

Logos, badges and illustrations with flat colors and clear shapes digitize best. Gradients, shadows and photographic textures do not translate to thread and get simplified. Use a high-resolution PNG or JPG with a plain background, and keep the number of colors small (six or fewer is a good target).

2. Decide the size before you convert

Embroidery is sized in millimetres or inches, not pixels. Decide the finished width first: the same image needs different stitches at 60 mm and at 120 mm. Small text is the usual problem. As a rule of thumb, capital letters under about 5 mm tall get hard to read once stitched.

3. Convert the image to stitches

Digitizing software, or an automatic converter, chooses a stitch type for each shape: satin for narrow strokes, fill for large areas, and running stitch for fine lines. It also sets stitch angle, underlay and pull compensation, and decides the order the needle follows, so jumps and trims stay low.

4. Check the preview

Look at the stitch preview, not just the image. Check that text is legible, that small details survived, and that the stitch count and sew time are reasonable for the garment.

5. Test sew on matching fabric

Fabric, thread and machine all affect the result. Sew a test on fabric similar to the final garment before you run a batch, and adjust size or density if needed.

Which file format?

DST is read by most commercial embroidery machines and stores needle positions and commands such as jumps, trims and color changes in units of 0.1 mm. It does not store real thread colors, so you assign threads at the machine.
